Dj kool herc’s pioneering effort–

Jamaican born DJ Clive “Kool Herc” Campbell is credited as being highly influential in the pioneering stage of hip hop music. In the early 1970s, DJ Kool Herc began organizing dance parties in his home in the Bronx These outdoor parties, hosted in parks, became a means of expression and an outlet for teenagers, where “instead of getting into trouble on the streets, teens now had a place to expend their pent-up energy.MC Kid Lucky mentions that “people used to break-dance against each other instead of fighting. As inspired by DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa created a street organization called Universal Zulu Nation, centered around hip hop, as a means to draw teenagers out of gang life and violence.

Rapping history–

Earlier, dj kool herc’s announcements and exhortations to dancers would lead to the syncopated, rhymed spoken accompaniment now known as rapping. Rap developed both inside and outside of hip hop culture, and began with the street parties thrown in the Bronx neighborhood of New York in the 1970s by Kool Herc and others. lyrical content of many early rap groups concentrated on social issues most notably in the seminal track “The Message” Hip hop gave young African Americans a voice to let their issues be heard.

“Rap” is a rhythmic style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames. Rapping (also known as emceeing, MCing,spitting (bars),or just rhyming) refers to “spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a strong rhythmic accompaniment”. It can be broken down into different components, such as “content”, “flow” (rhythm and rhyme), and “delivery”. Rapping is distinct from spoken word poetry in that is it performed in time to the beat of the music.Emceeing is the rhythmic spoken delivery of rhymes and wordplay, delivered over a beat or without accompaniment.

Beatboxing–

It is primarily concerned with the art of creating beats, rhythms, and melodies using the human mouth. The term beatboxing is derived from the mimicry of the first generation of drum machines, then known as beat boxes. As it is a way of creating hip hop music, it can be categorized under the production element of hip hop, however  it sometimes does include a type of rapping intersected with the human-created beat.

Black spades–

The gang originated in 1968 in the Bronxdale Houses in the Soundview section of the Bronx as the Savage Seven & began terrorizing the neighborhood. As the gang grew, they changed their name to the Black Spades. In the 1970s the various gangs had their own music. They walked (“bopped”) around with a box radio, starting a subculture inviting music in the lives of gang members. As dj kool herc recalled and quoted, “It started coming together as far as the gangs terrorizing a lot of known discotheques back in the days. I had respect from some of the gang members because they used to go to school with me. There were the Savage Skulls, Glory Stompers, Blue Diamonds, Black Cats and Black Spades. Afrika Bambaataa was the warlord of the Black Spades before becoming a famous hip hop DJ”.

The universal Zulu nation–

Afrika Bambaataa founded theuniversal Zulu Nation with a belief that gang members’ often violent urges could be turned into creative ones, the word Zulu actually means “the Heavens” and “strength in numbers”. the Zulu Nation is a great South African tribe that became an empire under the leadership of Shaka  Zulu, one of the greatest Zulu Chieftans (leaders).the universal Zulu nation stands for  fun, love knowledge,Wisdom,understanding,freedom,justice,equality,peace,unity,respect,work, ,overcoming the negative with the positive, economics, mathematics, science, life truth, facts ,faith and the oneness of god. Zulu Nation and many of his groups like; the Soulsonic Force, Shango, Rock Steady Crew, D.S.T., Fab Five Freddy, Phase 2, Dondi, and Futura 2000, started to travel throughout the world to spread Hip-Hop culture. Goals of universal Zulu nation-

To educate, develop and improve the present state of mind of adults and youth around the world.

To spread, the message of love, peace and unity amongst all races through our ways and actions.

To preserve, the culture of Hip-Hop and all art forms created from it and to use music as a medium for cultural exchange and understanding.

To assist, others in developing careers and opportunities as they express their God-given potential and talents.

Pioneering milestones–

• The first ever hip hop music video for “Planet Rock” showcased the subculture of hip hop musicians,      graffiti artists, and b-boys/b-girls.

• First ever Hip Hop TV show called “Graffiti Rock”.

• NYCBs were the first ever Hip Hop group and/or artists to perform in Washington D.C for a sitting President, Ronald Reagan, during the 1984.
