‘Comedy nights’ show has gone to dogs. Period.

This post is all about  the angst against the duffed up entertainment with the change of hosts.

“If the skin were parchment and the blows you gave were ink,
Your own handwriting would tell you what I think.”
― William Shakespeare, The Comedy of Errors

Yes! I have invoked Shakespeare to deal with this burden of viewer agony. I have borrowed this plainly without reading the eternal script  and it doesn’t take a genius to understand its (the quote) meaning. That is the whole duffing point. In times of such high needs (in India & around) for good humor, even normality or un-originality  can serve much better than profanity.

Egregious Errors

  1. Bad adaptation : –

1a) Background on hosts – There are three visible stars, as seen within the ongoing timeline of the show i.e. Krishna, Bharti & Sudesh Lehri.

Bharti & Krishna

Bharti & Krishna

Krishna is a dancer wannabe superstar and a half-committed comedian. He seems confused between his propensity for stardom & his sustenance as a comedian, that is just a stock act to propagate his career & chase his fonder dreams. He is erring like a broken record with endless & untimely tributes to Govinda as a show filler. His real personality as an interviewer is amorphous & confusing at best.

e.g.  He referred to the glasses of Mika as an attempt to look smart without having an onstage presence, that the honorable guest i.e. Dharmendra was also wearing one! It was ironical at best, as the segue was just about finishing with comments by Dharmendra, i.e. his mantra for youthfulness at the age of 80. It was dealt away with a smile & a comic response from the maestro actor himself.

Krishna clearly came across too green on the show’s turf & lacks ability to co-ordinate interviews, also without having any grasp of outstanding improvisations such as kapils’. The genius of kapil is, he did all of this within the limits of comic license while also maintaining the decency of show & dignity of the guests.

Bharti is a loud-mouth pseudo  comic, she derives slapstick humor at expense of others & demands emotional support on being the only noticeable female comedian in the industry. Her humor is clearly insulting many a times (even to most dignified guests e.g.1), it is downright profane & falls hard on the audience at most times. The periodic laughter that the in house audience generates, is almost like a punishment of compulsory humility & a taken for granted largesse by all of us, the humor deprived people. All her acts are an uncomfortable reminder of our sorry situation with limited options on comedy shows.

e.g.1 – At  today’s show end she refereed to the star trio as – “ye log itne velle thodi hein ki yahin ruke rahein” ( these people are not so useless to stay here for you (people).

There was a momentary pause from the 80 year old maestro Indian actor (Dharmendra) to her comments & it felt harsh even by  the most un-orthodox hosting standards. There is a clear lack of comic class , improvising intelligence, sensitivity towards guests-audience dynamism & basic understanding of show’s concept. Personally i think, her on-screen presence is hell on my ears & makes the situation awkward within the purview of family viewing. It is simply an agony not entertainment. I am a viewer i.e. a customer to their TV show business &   i am expressing my ire over it.

I can only say that i am sorry (but not giving or granting) for all of them. If they have the audacity to resume hosting of the best comedy show without matching to its quality. They have opened a Pandora’s box of abject criticism & they must be ready for it. I feel they have robbed & mocked us on something, which had turned the part of our Sunday nights.

“If she lives till doomsday, she’ll burn a week longer than the whole world.”
― William Shakespeare, The Comedy of Errors

Sudesh Lehri is the only genuine stand up comedian in this rag sack. He is fully committed to being a comedian & it is reflective in his demeanor. However, he is not burdened with the center spot & his credit is usually painted over by these broad stroking limelight hogs. Just like any true comedian, there is this tragedy to his art form.

Sudesh Lehri

Sudesh Lehri

“A rose by any other word would smell as sweet” (what is there in a name?)  – William Shakespeare , Romeo & Juliet

1b) Falsely Adopting a prodigy : Comedy nights with Kapil is a groundbreaking show. It is a super-hit not only in India but internationally sweeping TRP’s across all major nationalities. The recognition of an Indian comedy show as this is unprecedented! It is simply an intellectual asset of the TV world & pride of our urban heritage.

The (above mentioned) three stooges have assumed the lordship of this screen-house without much intelligent thoughts to its audience & format. The demand of show is simply this:

  • Clean & crass free comedy.
  • Outstanding improvisation as an add on.
  • Suitability to family viewing i.e. suitable for all age groups.
  • Genuine public interaction & their extempore contribution on stage.
  •  Good hosting with dignified treatment to celebrity guests.
  • Insightful & fact based interviews advancing fan-star relationship.

However, the stooges are doing the usual mistake of running with roasting humor & the comedy of profanity. It is their staple & familiar comfort zone but it is a disgrace even a betrayal to show’s tradition. It is done at expense of guests & even falls too hard on the ear of the  organic audience.

2) Who is hosting the show ? : The hosting & interview is a split between the hogs i.e. Krishna & Bharti. It not only breaks the continuity of the show but also leaves the viewers in confusion. Conceptually, the show revolves around a celebrity interview & everything else is an add-on. Until the image of a center stage host is fixed (ringmaster), no act can be profoundly build around it. I cannot remember even one single successful TV interview show in past/present, with changing & unsettling hosts like this one. It gives an impression that the centrifugal drives are missing or too  unsorted in their stage script.

Further, the hosting part is generally taken as an organic interaction with the celebrities & the lesser known facts from their personal lives are brought to notice. It is only logic that the interviewer must hold up his end as a real person & his personalities or characters can pop in as cameo. Kapil did it by introducing other comic talents as secondary add ons. Here, Krishna & Bharti are in characters even while conducting their ‘less-interesting’ interviews. While on stage, their characters cannot be switched & often we see dolly speaking as krishna & bharti verbally switching with a he/she tone. It is simply too chaotic & doesn’t build up on the dialogue segment!

3) Interacting with people is missing : It is a people’s show and so what made kapil sharma a comedian of people or a champion of people’s voices. Neither Krishna nor bharti have the demeanor that is inviting to set up a genuine dialogue with common audience. Rather as an observation, their behavior is too aggressive & even intimidating that will inhibit any open & expressive interaction with audience.

No one from audience is willing to dance, hop, speak or act on the stage. Kapil has said it time & again that the impromptu acts by the in house people, is the major reason for show’s success.

By desperately trying to  compete & make a creative equivalence with kapil’s concepts. I think the stooges are killing the U.S.P. & making a bigger mistake in garb of chasing a different route.

4) The great mistake by Kapil Sharma : It is a great betrayal of people’s trust. With no active comic talent hunts in India & not many clean comedy shows. It is imperative that the show must go on with what was working. It is an earnest requirement of the TV world with an otherwise coma state in its dreary milieu. It is even a national duty to do so when the breakdown is so visible & imminent.

kapil sharma

kapil sharma

The show has generated loyalists with a major chunk from the family audience around the world. The unprecedented success & meteoric rise of Kapil Sharma has lead him on false grounds, now chasing lesser dreams. It started with a beautiful idea to entertain people & deviated towards a show pandering to the celebrity creme’ de la creme’, to now an untoward starry eyed chase of a comedian to turn a bolly-wood superstar.

He is chasing stardom as an actor-comedian, while the general public has universally accepted him as a comedian & a champion of common man’s voice.  He is already on the highest ground available to any artist in the world, i.e. a genuine comedian who reverberates the feelings of people. Time will only tell if Kapil Sharma will realize his forte & his ticket to immortality in a world full of – cliches, copycats & hogging performers.

Thank you for reading. If you like this post then share it with your buddies & spread the opinion, as i sincerely feel that public opinion is supreme. After all, we are at the receiving end of whatever comes out of this brew. It is full of commercial bias that is eating out our free loading entertainment. We must raise our opinions and do so vociferously.

p.s.

I hate it when someone take a plunder on my sources of entertainment & deprives me of the humor, in a life full sober reality.

Junkman’s movie review – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

The storyteller - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

The storyteller – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)

Statutory warning – Spoilers, Explicit content

So here’s the deal,

Jonathan Liebesman’s new release,‘ Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)‘ is a good movie to watch.

Director Jonathan Liebesman -teenage mutant ninja turtles 2014

Director Jonathan Liebesman -teenage mutant ninja turtles 2014

To Humor such a long name, let’s call it old and goody ‘a Ninja Turtles movie’ instead 😀

A.  Movie plot : The foot gang spreads malice in the city. Ninja turtles are vigilante’ that keep bumping up their plans. The driving motive for turtles’ heroic is unclear. The protagonist (turtles) are driven by curiosity and adrenalin. However the background, their decision to fight for city is unclear.Likewise, the history of the foot gang is missing. Megan fox plays a rookie reporter. She accidentally drops into middle of few combats and pursuant  to it, connects her in the turtle’s story.

B.  Movie Story : It’s very agreeable to the old comics & TV series of ninja turtles.

These teenage ninja turtles keep showing up to malice in city. Megan fox accidentally peeks into a crime scene and uncovers the turtles as vigilante of New York city. Her involvement with uncovering these turtles leads her into her past.Meanwhile, the assault of foot gang grows stronger . The turning point appears to be the bust into turtles’s safe home in severs. The story doesn’t involve lot of twist and turns, neither it has much unveiling elements. It’s quite flat , yet full of turtle comedy and action sequences .Though, there is one important revelation towards the end.

Climax has lot of eyegasmic action scenes. It is filled with compact comedy and superb action. The best thing about the story, is that it rises towards the end. It holds action & comedy all along.

Ninja turtles (movie ,2014)

Ninja turtles (movie ,2014)

C.  Movie Screenplay : The 3-D experience is viewer- friendly. The appearance, stature & character depiction of turtles is right on money. The costumes, energy level, combat skills, underground turtle bunker , techi/teenage turtle talks is wonderful and adds brilliantly to the comedy-action combo.

The weaker link, is sequences of Megan fox in her solo scenes & desperate reporter modes. The acting is downright flat and meager. The scenes at the villain end are stereotypical. It is however gullible to some extent, it aligns with the old comics style.

There is a plenty load of fresh action and comedy. It is’ trademark turtle’ stuff 😀 and holds the audience in applause & laughter. It is very originally thought out. In short, turtles hold 80% of good experience, 15% is held by villians & 3-5% by megan fox.

D.  Villain : Shredder, leader of the foot gang-is heavy weight, always dressed in iron suit, equipped with knives & holds high martial art skills. However, his charisma is very off-putting & there is no info on his history. He is just a tough iron suit with no smart dialogues. The gang members are shown incompetent, they look like mannequins ,practicing dolls for turtles & they are unable to add any presence in the combat sequences.

Villain shredder - teenage mutant ninja turtles, 2014 movie

Villain shredder – teenage mutant ninja turtles, 2014 movie

Mr. sax is the schemer for all evil plans. The role is limited to providing information & managing his scum lab.

The villainous end could have created more charisma with dialogues & providing elaborated  role to Mr. Sax.

E.  Megan Fox hotness Quotient:-

This is an extra and un-usual addition in my review. I feel  it is quite necessary, considering the hype over Megan fox’s world class hotness notion.

It is downright disappointing & dry in this movie. She moves around the full time, in one or two pair of clothes. ( brown jacket, black trousers).Considering her U.S.P. being hotness, nothing is dropped hot on the screen. There are no hot dresses, no skin revelation or providing any kind of steam! It actually din’t matter for a minute, who is playing  a hot reporter in the movie! The hotness tag is completely down-played & cut-out!

Megan fox, no hotness dropped in movie

Megan fox, no hotness dropped in movie

If i were the producer of this movie, I could get more hotness for lesser budget! & hype maybe. Ingenuously speaking, that is all is required in such a plot! There’s not much scope for reporter’ acting & neither one can employ a stalwart actress to this role ( nor it is!!) Mr. Producer, please get hotness & get rid of unworthy brands & hype!

This is what you guys missed from megan fox. Some dose of this! & movie would have been a ‘hell-yeah’! 😀

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

F.  Movie Acting :

1. Turtles : Fabulous, comic, consistent to character & highly like-able.

2. Villian : Stereotypical, stoical, lacks charisma, lacks expression.

3. Megan Fox : Needs more skin tan!

Acting is meagre, dialogue delivery has no voice modulation, face expressions are stony. She needs to laugh out loud to look more natural! & she should look more emotionally/mentallyvulnerable in such a plot!

Here, she looks very firm, mentally resolved & a situation handler. It goes against the scenes.

G.   Summarizing flaws in the movie:-

1. Why did the turtles turn ninja & how did they procure such an expert training & typical weaponry by living in sewers!(reasons shown are insufficient.)

2. The primary motto of the dreaded foot-gang  is missing. They are guided & driven by Mr. sax.

3. The plan to create chemical catastrophe & sell anti-dote could be achieved with synthesis of another chemical & another anti-dote also!!   The specialty of ‘turtle-blood’ plan wasn’t dexterously laid out.

4. why does a professional reporter ( Megan Fox) doesn’t shoot her story with a professional camera/handy-cam. She roams around  with a phone camera! It seems like a very loose and un-thoughtful end.

5. First encounter, it is very difficult to distinguish whether a smuggling or a normal container shifting is being processed on the  docks. How does megan fox pre-meditatively, marks it as a crime scene from such a distant /difficult view outside.

6. Second encounter, it is ridiculous to see how a rookie reporter enters a terrorized metro station and right from the Main entrance!  She courageously charges in, rather sneaking would have seemed more realistic and genuine. It does not hold, even with the most risk  taking reporting! She could have sneaked in from another door & then get caught as scripted instead.

7. The driving motive of turtles, ‘saving New York city‘ is un-consolidated.

How to interpret poetry – chapter 2 of 2

What are the basic things you can do to make your poetic-comprehension better?

Here are the few basic things that you can try (some poem forms may have strict formats or overtly regularized rules of syllable count or line count, but considering most  poems are written as free verse) –

  1. You may read the poem’s title but don’t try to articulate your understanding of the poem around it. The poet may have variety of reasons for naming it and the fact that the title appears in the last line or is mostly repeated as a word, isn’t a great one to think so.
  1. Unless it’s a story running, there’s no beginning, middle and end-it’s not written like that. If there are five stanzas, each one is good enough to understand the intent of the poetry.
  1. Always try to look for the theme of the poem and try to guess the mood/state-of-wonder of the poet, in which it must have been written. There will always be circumstances that compel and challenge a poet, to sit down and write his verses.  What do you think were for this one?
  1. The most important thing is to understand the comparisons- if the poem is good with metaphors or if the poem is great with simile (because these are the most common & mostly used figure of speeches). If you can get a hang of few comparisons of those many, you can catch the thread of this big-revolving ball, embroiled with thoughts.
  1. If you can sympathize with the poem, that is good but if you see yourself in the poet’s shoes then it’s a great poem.  every poem with an emphatic effect is a master-piece.
  1. Rhyming schemes are not important, some poems may be structured like normal lines broken at random intervals, some with repetition of ‘ if,when,of’-> to start each line of stanza, some poet’s may obviate the breaking into stanzas and are completely obsessed with the momentum of it, the same way it has hit them while writing it. some poems may be decorated with lot of words that are rhyming together, sweet-sounding homophones, some have lot of commas & semicolon usages. some poets address a change or challenge into the society , they take pride in writing long line verses and repetitions that vociferate their idea. some just concentrate on so many multi-level comparisons, that everything else is forgotten.

Hence, it is not important to understand the rhyming scheme or words usage. As you may see, no poem can have all those attributes, if poem lives on one, it sacrifices the other.

It is important to catch the mental tone, in which the poet has written it. The maximum energy of his skills goes where? Find out?- the figure of speeches, the rhyming scheme, the beginning of the line, the momentum. Etc. it’s reverse-engineering. You try to put yourself in his shoes and you get everything as he has painted. You have your ocular device to view it and discuss your image of his vivid description.

How does a poet sees his poetry?

A poet sees his poetry as an external sense of his physical self. He takes all the bubbles of his emotional and mental thoughts, his innermost turmoil, he mixes them up and present it on paper via his tools. It is now captured into a static medium of observation from a dynamic, ever-evolving chain of thoughts. It has a specific date & time of birth. It can be spread & shared to others ,who will see it and express themselves too. They might be triggered into a similar state of realization. Hence, the poet’s need of expressing his idea is the fascination of its complexity, his spiritual gratification lies in the accomplishment of this task and the open end to the process is the revolution that it has created for others who read it.

What should you never tell a poet about his poem?

  1. Never tell a poet that he has a great vocabulary and that was an awesome word he used. The poet is already in a life-long struggle with himself to find the correct words, which of-course is a learning process and sometimes a frustrating wild-goose chase. He is more interested in the verbiage of the viewer of that poem (the person whose in the poem’s scene or scenario).
  1.  Never conclude a poem or give a linear opinion. Nobody in the poetic brethren will like it.
  1. Never lecture a poet to pick the topics or work on diluting the abstract thoughts to reader’s end. Remember! It’s not in his control! He writes what he experiences. If it’s intentional & topics are chosen to cater the reader, quality & purpose of the poem will suffer.
  1. Don’t give stupid comments that the rhyming is so abab! I like it! Or syllable count is great or its- long or short. These are simply secondary observations. He is more interested in your open-end description or your sympathy/empathy with the state of trance.
  1. At last, if you can suitably suggest an alternate title to the poem or discuss your opinion about a similar poem. It will be work great at both ends.

Where to start now after reading all of this?

The best place to start is with poems that can appeal. Simply, pick up limericks ( these are usually funny), haiku ( relates to idea of a scene) , general free verse poems of comical genres or poems on sarcasm about everyday’s life situation. It will be easier to start with and you can build your interest and dwell into other complicated work as per you discretion.

Good luck reading poems.

How to interpret poetry – chapter 1 of 2

If you are already an expert in writing poetry. This write-up is not for your read. If your well- versed with your simile, metaphor, other figure of speeches, this is not the article to read. however, if   logical demons of your mind averse you from getting into reading the stanzas, lines that outpour the mental euphoria, beautifully expressed phases of mental trance, moments of wonder that are captured on pages-> this article can give you few tips to open your mind into their acceptance. After-all, if you like reading English and don’t like poetry, there’s a major chunk of expression art you’re missing out while skipping those seemingly abstract phrases of poems.

Q: are you a music lover, do you listen to songs, appreciate the lyrics of all kind of music- hip-hop ,top charts, rap songs, trend breaking rhymes etc ? ( everything with melody, rhyme, song ,symmetry, is a poem at its core)

What happens when you try to read a poem-?

  1. You look at the title and you try to guess what this poem is all about.
  2. You see the length of the poem & the lines in each stanza with a cursory view.
  3. Mid-way through the poem-> you lose the trail of thought & start feeling that the abstract thought of poet is overdone.
  4. Finally, you pick one or two of your new-found favorite lines from that poem and you appreciate it. You pick few good words and its usage in the poem, praising the novelty of the poet.
  5. You get out of it, do away with formalities of appreciation & make a subconscious-mental note of never visiting that page/poem again.

Now a factoid

Perception of Beauty – what is the most common perception of beauty, is it complexity? Is it conspicuous difficulty in creating it? Is it the aesthetic, emotional, personal value connected to it? However, lot of answers may vary from person-to-person, but to a common viewer, the most noticeable perception of beauty is symmetry. It falls equally appealing to the logical mind and the artistic mind.

This is one of the prime reasons that when we look to evaluate something, which is seemingly un-familiar or even vague, our major value points are based on its symmetry.

In context to poetry-> the consistency with lines & syllables in the stanzas, the flow and the rhyming scheme. If any of these-three is distorted, we lose our hope to further familiarize with it.

How do people get into the flow of writing poetry and evolve with it?

I always wanted to know the basic difference between a writer and a poet. I couldn’t guess until I myself started writing articles. If I had two different brains and I begin to vacillate between the flow of a writer and the flow of a poet-

Things that would remain the same

  1. In both minds, I would be in a momentum of rushing thoughts, far more enhanced and over-powering to the body i.e. a psychogenic phenomenon. The control of mind over the body is so strong that it has a visible effect.
  2. Both minds are moody. One day they may work for 14 hrs a day and for others they may simply put you off.
  3. Both minds work dynamically in constructing their expressions, i.e. the idea may be static but its aspects, priority & revelation may keep on changing from one moment to another. For e.g. if I get an idea right now & I start writing an article about it or create a poem about it, something good comes out.

Now, if I keep that idea in mind and I stall its construction say till the evening. It’s revealing to note that the work that was done in the day to the night will have great difference in its structuring.

Things that are different in comparison

  1. Writing an article may take the most intellectual fodder of your brain & your mind sinks into it completely but good poetry writing is a synergism of- mind, soul & heart. Therefore, it is usually written in complete silence & isolation, where in an article may-be written sipping through you cappuccino in a coffee house, A poem commands the complete support of your emotion, memory, soul, heart & mind. It is as if you’re in a state of wonder. The process is highly metaphysical & super-sophisticated in nature.

  1. Both minds may-be moody but if writing is done to recapitulate a larger narration or give a view point, Poetry is done to satiate your need for personal expressions & imitate the beautification of -nature ,thought or a scenery by one’s skill in indirect & direct comparison.

  1. Both minds work dynamically, but one works linearly and other (poetic) loves to work in varied- dimensions-> sentences are twisted, phrases are inverted, word forms are changed, everything is done to break the linearity and rules. The language and draft of a writer may-be binding but a poet loves to keep as many open ends as possible, everything is subjective, he will provide you with a view and give you different lenses and ocular devices to view it. He will love to see you notice something further.

  1. A writer may love to simplify a scene but a poet will always take pride in its synthesis. It’s like viewing a mountain & a river, the writer writes about his awe of this vivid scenery but a poet might sometime never mention the river & mountain as a separate entity i.e. forming a scene but comparing them to something else. He will even work in creating the un-seen relations between these two- in harmony, different weathers, with the clouds, with the trees, with the animals & all this is being worked at multi- levels in his poetic brain.

He might finally come up with an entirely different narration to explain the scenery & the poem’s title will never be about the scene but the innermost revelation in the process. On the other hand, writers tend to give a hook & sneak-peak to intimate about the content in the article. A poet is least bothered about the hook but the joy of his creation & the entire flow of read.
